Facing NNE, staircase is to the left rear, a portion of the makeshift air return can be seen in the upper portion of the frame. We are seeing the other end (East end) of the joist just pictured. Again no joist hangers to speak of. Behind the electrical box and duct work is a pier for the fireplace/chimney.
